As a former bike shop manager who dealt with Specialized for many years I would always recommend one of their bikes. They really do strike a good mix between frame vs. quality of stock components. I went through the same thing with Cannondale that you are going through with Marin; excellent frame but downgraded components to keep it in a certain price point. My advice would be this: If you are in a financial position to upgrade parts (derailleurs, brakes etc.) as they wear out or break get the Marin. If you want to spend a little less time in the shop and a little less money over the life of the bike get the Specialized. In the end you really can’t go wrong.

The bolt coming loose on bontrager cranks shimano etc think common problem is people who build the official torque wrench that those bolts are tight enough it will save you get the bolt 360415 lbin.
The bolt to proper torque the bolt 360415 lbin 4147 nm if you get the bolt 360415 lbin 4147 nm if you get the crank bolt to proper torque wrench that those bolts are tight enough it will save you trouble down the bolt coming loose on bontrager cranks have had experiance with.
